Terms of Service

Template — not finished.The operator name, contact address and governing jurisdiction are still placeholders. The global admin sets them in Admin › Instance. These documents have not been reviewed by a lawyer and are not legal advice.

1. Who these terms are between

These terms govern your use of the MIR//AUTOS instance at mir.autos, operated by [Operator name] (“we”, “us”). By creating an account, using the website, or using the mobile apps or API with an account, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

2. Accounts

  • You must be old enough to enter a contract where you live, and you must provide a working email address.
  • You are responsible for the security of your password, connected sign-in providers and API tokens, and for activity under your account.
  • The first account registered on an instance becomes its administrator. The administrator may approve members as manual editors, disable accounts, and close registration.
  • We may suspend or remove an account that is being used in breach of these terms.

3. Your garage data

Vehicles, VINs, odometer readings, service records, trips and photos you add are yours. They are private to your account unless you mark a vehicle or your profile as public, in which case other visitors can see the fields described in the Privacy Policy. Keep your own backups; the service is provided as is.

4. Repair manuals and contributions

Manuals are written by members the administrator has approved as editors. When you contribute text, photos, video or other content to a manual, a comment, or a profile, you:

  • confirm you have the right to contribute it, including any photos or video, and that it does not copy a manufacturer's or publisher's copyrighted manual;
  • grant the operator and other users of this instance a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, display, reproduce, adapt and distribute it as part of the service, including in the manual's version history;
  • accept that every edit is recorded with your display name and account email in the manual's git history, and that earlier versions remain retrievable after later edits or removals; and
  • agree that other approved editors may edit or remove what you wrote.

You may embed YouTube videos by link; YouTube's own terms apply to that content.

5. Safety disclaimer

Repair procedures, maintenance intervals and comments are provided for information only, are written by community members, and may be incomplete, out of date or wrong for your exact vehicle. Working on a vehicle can cause injury, death, or damage. You are solely responsible for deciding whether a procedure is appropriate, for following the manufacturer's documentation and applicable law, and for the results of any work you do. Nothing here replaces a qualified technician.

6. Acceptable use

You must not use the service to:

  • post content that is unlawful, infringing, defamatory, harassing or deceptive;
  • post a manufacturer's or publisher's copyrighted manual or diagrams without permission;
  • look up VINs, or view profiles and vehicles, for any purpose other than using the service;
  • send unsolicited or abusive private messages;
  • attempt to gain unauthorised access to the service, other accounts, the git store or the host; or
  • place a load on the service, the API, or the VIN lookup that degrades it for others.

7. API and mobile apps

API tokens are personal to your account and may be revoked at any time from Settings. You are responsible for anything done with a token you created. We may rate-limit or revoke tokens that abuse the service.

8. Availability and data

The service is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. We do not guarantee uptime and may change or discontinue features. You may delete your vehicles, records and account content at any time; manual edits remain in the version history as described above.

9. Third-party services

VIN lookups are sent to the United States NHTSA vehicle-decoder service. Sign-in with Google, GitHub, Microsoft or Facebook is optional and subject to those providers' terms. The administrator may install an analytics snippet from a third-party provider; see the Cookie Policy.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, for lost profits, revenue or data, or for injury or damage arising from following content on the service.

11. Termination

You may stop using the service at any time. We may terminate access for breach of these terms.

12. Changes

We may update these terms. Material changes will be reflected in the “last updated” date above, and continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of [jurisdiction], without regard to conflict-of-law rules.

14. Contact

Questions about these terms: [contact email].

Mobile app, trip tracking and devices

The Android app is offered as-is for use with this instance. Automatic trip detection relies on your phone's location and activity sensors and may miss, split or merge drives; check recorded trips before relying on them for mileage claims or tax purposes. Only one device per account records trips automatically. You are responsible for the devices signed in to your account: review them under Settings › Devices and log out any you do not recognise. The operator may log out a device or revoke access to protect the service.

Where the operator has configured Mapbox, map tiles are provided by Mapbox under its terms of service; otherwise maps use OpenStreetMap data (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL).
